Challenge Link-Up Post: Classic in Translation

Please link your reviews for your Classic in Translation here.  This is only for the Classic in Translation category.  These should all be classics that were originally written in a language other than your primary language; that is, if you are a native English speaker, it should be a classic written in another language other than English.  If you are not a native English speaker, it could be in English (or any other language, other than your primary language). If you want to read the book in its original language, that's fine too!

If you do not have a blog, or somewhere public on the internet where you post book reviews, please write your mini-review/thoughts in the comments section.  If you like, you can include the name of your blog and/or the title of the book in your link, like this: "Karen K. @ Books and Chocolate (The Count of Monte Cristo)."

  1. I neglected to comment at the time I first posted. My first book for the Challenge is The Iliad, perhaps the foundational work of Western literature, and which I read now for the first time.

  2. I read The Count of Monte Cristo. It is such a fabulous classic, and I feel like I got more from it this time than I have in the past. What a difference a translation makes! http://www.mentorofleaders.com/the-count-of-monte-cristo-back-to-the-classics-challenge/

  6. "A Fine of Two Hundred Francs" gave me a first hand view into the world of occupied France during WWII. Although this book is fiction the stories are heavily influenced by Elsa Triolet's own experience in the Resistance. Curiously my Virago edition does not say who the translator was. The very comprehensive and interesting introduction was written by Helena Lewis.
I finished it before I went on a five-week trip and I am still thinking about it.

  7. I don't remember if I said my name was Laura or Laurke on the other categories, but I'm the same person :) I read The Betrothed (I Promessi Sposi)- my favorite for the year!
